A History of Highlands, NC from 1875 - Today!

Lake Sequoia - Highlands North Carolina

If a line were drawn from New Orleans to New York and from Savannah to Chicago, Highlands, North Carolina would be at the point where they cross. That was the premise back in 1875 when two entrepreneurs from Kansas thought this intersection of two ideal trade routes would lead to the development of a large population center. What they did not foresee was the extreme terrain leading to an elevation of 4,000 feet that would prevent steam engines and horse-drawn wagons from traveling here. Although their dream may not have developed as they thought, Highlands did become a dream-come-true for many summer residents who soon discovered Highlands´ natural beauty and cooler summer climate.

With the summer visitors, Highlands thrived with new businesses, hotels, services, a public library, post office, and school. Another major change to Highlands occurred in the 1920's when a dam to provide hydroelectric power was constructed on the Cullasaja River. By-products of this dam was the creation of beautiful Lake Sequoia and a breath-taking road that closely follows the river gorge to expose unbelievable rock walls, mountain views, and waterfalls.

The Town of Highlands continued to prosper in the 1930's as the year-round population of around 500 residents increased to nearly 3,000 in the summer when more and more people escaped to the beauty of the mountains. The increase in businesses on the plateau led to the creation of the Highlands Chamber of Commerce.

Because Highlands continued to experience growth in both homes and businesses, a land use plan and zoning regulations were initiated to protect the natural resources of the area. Currently, Highlands enjoys a population of approximately 3,000 year-round residents with up to 25,000 summer residents and visitors. More than 200 businesses serve the community.

Highlands possesses a unique demographic mix of long-time local residents, regular summer residents, business-owners, professionals, resort visitors, and outdoors enthusiasts. A focus on the arts contributes to Highlands´ position as a cultural center, attracting musicians, photographers, artists, authors, and actors to the area. The incredible natural beauty of the native plants, streams, waterfalls, mountains, and mountain trails also draws naturalists, scholars, and scientists to Highlands.

Today, Highlands, NC is a desirable destination for people from all across the United States. Many of these visitors desire to purchase Highlands real estate and properties in the neighboring cities.  Everyone enjoys the cool summer temperatures, the beautiful fall colors when the leaves begin to change, the snows and skiing in winter, and the mild springs. Being surrounded by thousands of acres of National Forest ensures that Highlands´ natural beauty will remain for generations to enjoy.
